Jon looked at my facial expression animation and suggested I animated the shoulders and neck in order to emphasise the ‘shocked’ expression. My feedback was to create clearer storyboards with descriptions of the animation principles I was demonstrating. We started the week with a session in the media lab presenting our 3 animation ideas and trying them out on TV Paint. I’ve spent a lot of time sketching, mainly self-portraits, and can see my drawings slowly improving. I struggled quite a lot in the workshops and found it hard to keep up so I’ll need to try the exercises again in my own time. We also looked at animating eye blinks and eye darts too. Our workshops this week focused on drawing and animating self-portraits and facial expression. Thursday’s workshop focused more on movement and the animation principles, and how we can apply them all to our own work. I bought a couple of basic sketchbooks of different sizes and a selection of graphite sticks which has encouraged me to be sketchier and less precious about my drawings. Monday’s workshop was a good introduction to this and encouraged me to loosen up my drawings. I’ve been doing a mixture of quick, timed drawings and longer more detailed ones too. ![]() I’ve been keeping up with this off timetable as well by sketching friends, passers-by and also doing self-portraits. ![]() The focus for this week has been to start a sketchbook for the animated sketchbook project.
